Here's another question first: Which would you rather have - 1500 followers that don't pay attention to what you write OR 150 followers who are true fans and refer you to potential clients or networking opportunities. You want the true fans. Just like in life, it's quality over quantity.

It's true. If you want to get more followers to your blog, you have to write good, relevant, helpful content. Teach me something I don't know or put a new spin on something I aminterested in, and I will follow you.

Once your blog has something interested to tell the world, one of the easiest way to get people to notice your blog is to follow other blogs.  Find bloggers in your niche that are writing about topics that you are genuinely interested in and follow them.  Often times, they will follow you back if your blog has information that is relevant.

The next step is to comment on other peoples blogs.  By leaving a comment with your name and a link back to your site on a busy industry blog, you can drive traffic to your site.  But, take warning, the 'blogosphere' does not like hype and blatant self-promotion, so this will only work if you leave a comment that is relevant to the post you are commenting on.  Be helpful and people will take notice.
